Moving to Lisbon? One of the first questions every expat asks is: How much will it actually cost to live here? After living in Lisbon for several years as a Vietnamese expat, I've tracked every expense and learned where you can save (and where you shouldn't).

Here's my honest breakdown of what it costs to live comfortably in Lisbon in 2026, with real numbers from my own experience and fellow expats.

    Quick Summary: Monthly Budget Ranges

LifestyleMonthly Cost (EUR)What This Gets You
Budget€1,200 - €1,500Shared apartment, cook at home, limited dining out
Comfortable€1,800 - €2,5001-bedroom apartment, mix of cooking/dining out, regular activities
Luxury€3,000+Prime location, frequent dining, premium lifestyle

These ranges assume you're not supporting dependents and exclude major one-time costs like visa fees or furniture.

    Housing: Your Biggest Expense

Housing will eat up 30-50% of your budget, depending on your choices.

Rental Prices by Area (1-bedroom apartment)

    Prime Central Areas:

    • Chiado/Bairro Alto: €1,200 - €1,800/month
    • Príncipe Real: €1,100 - €1,600/month
    • Santos Design District: €1,000 - €1,500/month

    Great Neighborhoods (Slightly Less Central):

    • Campo de Ourique: €800 - €1,200/month
    • Avenidas Novas: €700 - €1,100/month
    • Alvalade: €650 - €1,000/month

    Budget-Friendly Areas:

    • Benfica: €500 - €800/month
    • Olivais: €450 - €700/month

    Additional Housing Costs

    • Utilities (electricity, water, gas): €80 - €150/month
    • Internet: €25 - €40/month
    • Building maintenance (condomínio): €20 - €80/month

Pro tip: Many landlords include utilities in the rent, but always clarify upfront. Winter heating bills can surprise you!

Food & Groceries: Affordable If You Know Where to Shop

Portugal has some of the best food prices in Western Europe, but it depends on your shopping habits.

    Monthly Grocery Budget

    • Budget cooking: €150 - €200/month
    • Comfortable mix: €250 - €350/month
    • Premium/organic focus: €400+/month

Where I Shop (and What I Spend)

Continente/Pingo Doce (mainstream supermarkets): €60-80/week for two people
Lidl (budget option): €40-60/week for two people
El Corte Inglés Gourmet (premium): €100+/week for specialty items

    Dining Out Costs

    • Lunch at local tasca: €8 - €12
    • Dinner at mid-range restaurant: €15 - €25 per person
    • Weekend brunch in trendy spot: €12 - €18
    • Coffee and pastéis de nata: €2.50 - €3.50

My monthly dining budget: €300 - €400 (eating out 2-3x per week)

    Transportation: Excellent Value

Lisbon's public transport is efficient and affordable.

    Monthly Transport Costs

    • Navegante monthly pass (all zones): €40
    • Bike sharing (GIRA): €25/year + usage fees
    • Uber/Bolt (occasional): €30 - €60/month
    • Car ownership: €200 - €400/month (including insurance, fuel, parking)

My recommendation: Skip the car unless you plan to explore outside Lisbon regularly. The metro, trams, and buses cover everything you need.

    Real Example: My Monthly Budget

Here's what I actually spend as a comfortable middle-class expat:

    CategoryMonthly Cost (EUR)
Rent (1-bed in Campo de Ourique)€950
    Utilities & Internet€120
    Groceries€280
    Dining Out€350
    Transportation€40
    Phone & Subscriptions€45
    Health Insurance€55
    Entertainment & Activities€250
    Miscellaneous€150
    Total€2,240

This gives me a very comfortable lifestyle with regular dining out, weekend activities, and occasional trips.

Is Lisbon Affordable? My Honest Take

Compared to other Western European capitals: Yes, absolutely. You'll spend 30-50% less than London, Paris, or Amsterdam.

Compared to US cities: Mixed. Cheaper than SF/NYC, similar to mid-tier US cities, but salaries are lower.

The sweet spot: €1,800 - €2,200/month gives you a genuinely comfortable lifestyle without feeling restricted.

For digital nomads: If you're earning US/UK salaries remotely, Lisbon offers incredible value and quality of life.

    Final Thoughts

Lisbon strikes an amazing balance between affordability and quality of life. You can live well here without the financial stress of other major European cities, while enjoying incredible food, culture, and weather.

The key is being realistic about your lifestyle expectations and choosing the right neighborhood for your budget. Start conservative, get to know the city, then adjust as you discover your preferences.
